Verificata WATCHSHOP Compratore

Vintage watches have a lot to offer thats hard to find these days, from smaller case sizes to a lack of bling to more handsome designs - and usually no date window, for those of us who prefer a cleaner, more symmetrical dial without a hole cut into it. And, of course, they offer genuine retro-cool. Though good examples are becoming rarer they can still be found, but the better ones tend to be expensive and will usually require servicing, providing the parts are still available and you can find someone to do it. Only those with deep pockets and the patience of a saint need apply.

So, what modern watches are available offering the same cool vintage styling but dont cost an arm and a leg? A lengthy online search revealed not that much, to be honest. A notable exception is the City Legend series from Oxygen, a French brand I hadnt heard of previously - and whats more, in stock at WatchShop...

Having received the watch, the first thing that occurred was just what a great job Oxygen have done, staying true to the 40s/50s vibe with small seconds on some models such as this one a 36mm version with centre seconds is also available, and adding some enlightened touches, which Ill come to later, but especially with the choice of dial/hand combination and subtle numeral font. Have to say this level of intelligent design restraint is very appealing, especially today where everything is shouted rather than whispered.

Anyway, lets get to some details.

SPECS:
Limited and numbered edition of 888 pieces
Case: 39mm - Stainless steel mirror polished
Case back : Stainless steel - snap-on
Dial: Silver micro-blasted with applied rose gold indices
Hands : Rose gold mirror polished
Crystal : Double-domed acrylic
Movement : Quartz Seiko VD78 - no date 3-hand with small seconds
Strap : 20mm - Calf leather - hand made with stainless steel buckle
Guarantee : 2 years

The watch is a limited edition of 888 pieces. Why they chose that number is a mystery, but each piece is individually numbered on the case-back. The movement is the Seiko VD78, a 3-hand movement without date and a perfect choice. Adjusting the time, as youd expect from Seiko, the movement feels solid and well put together with no sloppiness ensuring lots of confidence in the quality. Accuracy is great, too, neither losing or gaining time since first setting over a week ago.

The case finishing is flawless and certainly exceptional for a watch at this price. Total height including the crystal is just 10mm so wearing a shirt with cuffs will be no problem. Acrylic crystals can sometimes divide opinion, but I love them. A lot tougher than youd think and again, absolutely correct for the watch adding its own characteristic warmth to the dial. Also, its double-domed, meaning the outer and inner sides of the crystal are parallel ensuring less distortion when viewing at an angle. The unobtrusive lugs are a good length ensuring no snagging of the strap on the case, and guarantee the watch will lay comfortably on the wrist. Along with the light weight, Its one of the most comfortable watches I have ever worn. The crown is a decent size with the Oxygen logo a five-point star embossed on the outside. Again, a nice touch.

The silver dial not just silver coloured is micro sand-blasted with a small-seconds sub-dial lightly engraved with concentric rings, adding a pleasing contrast. The dial has a lovely satin sheen and varies in colour, depending on the light, ranging from white to a light grey. Yet another noteworthy detail is the proper size of the sub-seconds dial, something many makers get wrong, either too small or too close to the centre, or both in the worst cases. In addition, the dial also curves downwards on the outer edge towards the case. Another example of the care put in to getting the vintage details right. Under a loupe, the printing is crisp and well executed.

Id say the colour of the hands is more a mix of old gold/rose gold than the often pinkish hue of rose gold but again, theyre mirror polished with a shallow bevel along the centre line. The overall effect of the play of light on the hand/dial combination is quite stunning, especially with the addition of applied not painted rose gold indices at the quarter hour. It should also be emphasised that the hands are also the correct length - hour hand reaching the hour markers with the minute hand reaching to the outer edge of the minute marker, exactly as they should be. At the tip the minute hand also curves downwards parallel to the curve on the dial. Yet another authentic vintage element.

As mentioned above, the strap is calf leather with Hand Made stamped on the lining, along with the Oxygen branding adding another element to the long list of positives about this watch. In fact, its so nice I couldnt bear to think of it becoming damaged, so have saved it in the box and swapped out for a previously used strap!

To summarise, on close inspection the watch reveals a lot of pleasant surprises. All the design decisions mentioned above are totally consistent with the vintage theme and the attention to detail in this respect is most impressive - a point worthy of emphasis. Full credit is due to Oxygen that they havent done half a job like so many makers today, not just with the design but in the quality of movement, manufacturing and materials. A beautiful watch and if it matters to you, it looks a lot more expensive than the more than reasonable price. If you like the styling of vintage watches but find the idea of an old mechanical watch too much of a headache and too expensive, look no further. Even without the frequent discounts offered by WatchShop its still a no-brainer. Verdict: 10/10
